Do It Yourself Glitter Booties

Anybody can do this uber easy, uber inexpensive project.  Liz first became obsessed last year when she saw Co-op Barneys New York Glitter Ankle Boot (below).  We had to have the perfect pairing of the rustic boot with the glam glitter.

But since the almost $600 price tag was a little rich for Liz's blood, she instead opted to make her own using look-alikes from Old Navy for $34.94.  (If you're willing to shell out a little more, Sam Edelman's Petty is another great style for $129.95.)  There are several blogs detailing how to do this, including prettyshinysparkly.com, which we used as a guide.  (A huge, sparkly thank you to Kristina for the great inspiration!)

Before: Old Navy Faux Suede Ankle Boots, $24 (OldNavy.com)
You will need:
1.  Booties
2.  Painter's tape
3.  Mod Podge Matte
4.  Course glitter
5.  Fine glitter (we recommend Martha Stewart)
6.  Aleene's Jewel-It Glue
7.  Sponge paint brush

Step 1: Using painter's tape, carefully tape off your clean, dry bootie around the desired area.  (Don't forget the heel - we almost did!)

Step 2:  Using your sponge brush, mix both sizes of glitter with Aleene's Jewel-It Glue and paint the desired area.  (We recommend mixing the glitter in a paper plate or bowl for easy clean up.)

Step 3:  While the area is still wet, sprinkle on coarse glitter.  (Again, we recommend doing this over a paper plate.) Once dry, gently dust off loose glitter.  Let dry overnight.

Step 4:  Mix the fine glitter with Mod Podge Matte and seal the heel.  (Editor's tip: we probably got a little over-zealous with our Mod Podging, which makes the tape harder to peel up, so paint with care.)  And no need to freak out (we did!); the white Mod Podge dries completely clear.  Let dry for 24 hours.

Step 5:  Peel away the tape.  (Tip: Use an exacto knife if any glue has dried onto the tape making it difficult to pull up.) And you're done!
And if you still want this season's hottest shoe but don't love Mod Podge as much as we do, here are a few ready-to-wear options you can choose from:

Matt Bemson, $218 (Bloomingdale's)
Vince Camuto, $100 (Dillard's)
Colin Stuart Glitter Bootie, $98 (Victoria's Secret)
